Energy Series Discusses Climate Change

John Nielsen-Gammon, the Texas State Climatologist, and David Hone, chief climate change advisor for Royal Dutch Shell, answer audience questions during NSM and UH Energy’s Energy Symposium Series, “Climate Change: Is it a Real Threat?” The February topic drew nearly 300 guests ranging from students and alumni to industry representatives and the general public.


Culture & Science Events Kicks Off with Downton Abbey

Held in partnership with Houston Public Media, NSM friends, alumni and faculty attended a private viewing of the PBS-hit “Downton Abbey.” After the viewing, guests were part of the live studio audience for the post-show, “Manor of Speaking,” with host Ernie Manouse. Read more


Hess Corporation Supports Student Scholarships

Lisa Buckner of Hess Corporation is joined by faculty and students as she presents a $10,000 gift to the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. It will be used for a Hess scholarship that will be awarded to graduate geophysics or field-based geology students.


Culture & Science Red and White Wine Dinner

Dean Dan E. Wells welcomes guests to the Red and White Wine Dinner as part of the Culture & Science Series. The second event in the Culture & Science Series sold out with a wonderful mix of alumni, friends, faculty and staff in attendance. Proceeds benefitted NSM. Read more

Mars Rover Celebration 2014

More than 650 elementary and middle school students representing 29 Houston-area schools participated in the 12th Annual Mars Rover Celebration held at UH. Student teams research, design and construct a model rover to carry out a specific science mission. A $25 limit on supplies helps students learn about budgets and project management, while keeping the costs accessible for all schools. Nearly 400 UH students, faculty and alumni volunteered as judges and tour hosts; the event is led by Edgar Bering, professor of physics.
