The first day of class coincided with the solar eclipse. NSM’s Department of Physics and the Astronomy Society of UH hosted viewing opportunities outside Science & Research Building 1 and in the UH Observatory on top of the building. More the 300 NSM students celebrated the start of the fall semester at NSM’s Block Party the Sunday before the first day of class. Activities included student organization tables, games, panel sessions, NSM t-shirts, and food off the grill prepared by Dean Dan Wells and the NSM Student Leaders.
In response to Hurricane Harvey, UH students, led by True Furrh, an NSM Ambassador double-majoring in environmental sciences and civil engineering, identified ways they could help. As the city began to dry out, they focused on cleanup, setting up vanpools and identifying homes in need of help. Crews of students were dispatched to locations across Houston. Nearly 250 alumni, faculty, staff, friends and family attended the NSM Tailgate for the first home game of football season. The group enjoyed food, drinks, and live entertainment from the all-UH professor band, Post-Tenure Revue. The afternoon tailgate kicked off the season in style, and the Coogs added to the celebration with a 38-3 Bayou Bucket win over Rice.
Two smart carts! UH Allied Geophysical Lab student, Michael McClimans, demonstrates a ground-penetrating radar system to a budding young scientist and his family during Energy Day activities. Energy Day, held downtown in Sam Houston Park, is Houston’s largest annual free family festival showcasing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
NSM staff helped students with directions and information the first two days of the fall semester. The College hosted a table outside the Science Engineering Classroom building. The event, in its 20th year, is organized by the UH Staff Council.
