NSM Launches Culture & Science Events
Exploring How Science Applies to Our Cultural Interests
In January, the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics launched the Culture & Science signature event series. The events provide a forum for discussion and exploration of how science applies to cultural interests.
“These events offer our alumni and friends an opportunity to connect various components of culture to the intricacies of science,” said Dan E. Wells, NSM dean. “We’ve had an excellent turn out for the first two events.”
In early 2014, the events are focusing on shared cultural interests of the arts, fine dining and sports. Each event provides an opportunity for discussion led by a scientific expert and exposes the mysteries of science and how it has challenged the conventions of cultural interests.
April 11 – Join NSM at Take Me Out to the Ball Game
There’s nothing more American than baseball, and NSM’s April Culture & Science event will be at Cougar Field. Alumni, students, faculty, staff, family and friends will gather to watch the Houston Cougar baseball team take on the Louisville Cardinals.
The evening includes a picnic dinner, a short lecture on the physics of baseball, and reserved seating for the game.

First Two Culture & Science Events Sell Out
The first two Culture & Science events drew a capacity crowd to kick off the series.
NSM guests on the set of “Manor of Speaking.”
New friendships were formed as guests learned about medicine in post-Edwardian England at “An Evening with Downton Abbey” in January. The group enjoyed a private viewing of the PBS hit, “Downton Abbey,” at Houston Public Media. After the show, guests were part of the live studio audience for the post-show, “Manor of Speaking,” hosted by KUHT’s Ernie Manouse.

On the eve of Valentine’s Day, the “Red and White Wine Dinner” provided an opportunity for friends, alumni, faculty and staff from the NSM community to learn about oenology, the science and study of all aspects of wine and winemaking. The event featured a five-course gourmet dinner at Julia’s bistro paired with wines from around the world, and a lecture on the science of winemaking. NSM alumnus Wayne Luckett (‘74), president of Branwar Wine Distributing Co., shared background on the wines while Aaron Corsi (‘09, M.S. ‘11), lecturer with UH’s Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management and co-founder of 8th Wonder Brewery in Houston, talked about the science behind food and wine pairings.
