Neelesh Mutyala, honors biomedical sciences major, was selected as student regent for the UH System Board of Regents. During his one-year term, he will have all of the duties and responsibilities of a board member except for voting and quorum privileges. The Board of Regents, composed of nine regular members, as well as a student regent, is the governing body for the UH System. Read More
IMPACT Gala - Grand Finale of Student Appreciation
The IMPACT Gala in April ended with a touching tribute to Carolyn Farb, NSM Legacy Award recipient. Several hundred NSM students flooded the ballroom carrying placards of “Thank you, Dr. Farb!” and “NSM Impact” as a representation of the 400 student lives impacted through Farb’s scholarships to date. Galápagos Islands: Learning and Research Abroad Opportunity
Twenty-nine UH students participated in the Galápagos Research-Based Study Abroad, May 26-June 20. The group pictured was collecting data on how sea urchin density is regulated by habitat structure, food availability and fish predators. The course was taught by faculty from NSM and the Honors College, and 18 NSM majors participated.
Geophysics Field Camp: Learning Advanced Surveying Techniques
Students at the 2017 Geophysics Field Camp undertake a vertical seismic profiling experiment at UH’s La Marque Geophysical Test Site south of Houston. These measurements help determine soil properties and locate fresh groundwater. In an intense 8-day experience, Field Camp participants learned advanced geophysical surveying techniques including the use of ground-penetrating radar, airborne drones, well logging, LIDAR, gravity, magnetics, resistivity tomography, as well as land and marine seismic surveys. This hands-on learning of geophysical methods helps develop outdoor and team skills and positions students for later careers in the resource, environmental and research sectors.
NSM’s 4.0 Summa Cum Laude Graduates – Nguyen, Pepin and Baig
Three students were recognized for their perfect 4.0 GPAs during NSM’s Spring Convocation at NRG Arena. All three are pursuing advanced degrees. In August, Nga Nguyen will attend medical school at University of Texas Medical Branch, Karissa Pepin will enter the geophysics Ph.D. program at Stanford University, and Mirza Baig will be a medical student at Baylor College of Medicine. More than 470 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree candidates participated in Convocation on May 13.
