Chiyoda Young Innovators’ Academy 2018

Twenty-eight students, grades 7-9, attended the Chiyoda Young Innovators’ Academy. They spent two weeks at UH learning what it takes to develop an idea, taking it from a concept to an invention. Understanding Prairie Ecology

Steven Pennings, Moores Professor of Biology and director of the UH Coastal Center, is working on a large-scale experiment that examines the role of micronutrients in prairie herbivore populations, which include insects such as grasshoppers and aphids. This experiment is being carried out at the Coastal Center, which was designated by the Texas legislature as the Texas Institute for Coastal Prairie Research and Education. Read More

Coogs at Sea!

Earth & Atmospheric Sciences graduate students Xiang Ling and Atlanta Sen and undergraduate Edgar Contreras took part in expedition KH 18-02 of the research vessel Hakuho Maru in the Western Pacific Ocean. The trip was sponsored by the National Science Foundation, NSM and the Atmospheric and Ocean Research institute of the University of Tokyo. They studied the volcanic floor of the Shikoku Basin with an international science consortium co-led by UH EAS faculty Jonathan Snow.

NSM Activities - Take Your Child to Work Day

NSM faculty, students and staff organized activities for a group of children of UH employees during Take Your Child to Work Day. Activities included:

  • Virtual reality and augmented reality game demos by Department of Computer Science
  • Chemistry demos by the American Chemical Society Student Chapter
  • Superconductivity, connecting circuits and gyroscope rotating stools and wheels demos by Department of Physics and Texas Center for Superconductivity at UH.
