Computer Science Research Open House Provides Hands-On Demonstrations

Members of the UH Computational Biomedicine Lab demonstrated new methods under development to verify identity via biometrics. Their ultimate goal is to eliminate passwords so we can use our face as a password.

Convocation Features Outstanding Students as Banner Bearers

Outstanding students from each of NSM’s six departments were selected to carry the UH, NSM and departmental banners. NSM Convocation, held on December 17, recognized Summer 2015 and Fall 2015 graduates.

Mars Rover Event Involves 636 3rd–8th Graders

The 14th Annual Mars Rover Celebration brought together 181 elementary and middle school student teams showcasing their rover models. The event is the culmination of a six-week classroom or homework-based activity where students select a specific science mission and design a rover to complete the task. Henry Zhang, a biology major, was one of more than 250 NSM student and alumni volunteers serving as judges or tour guides.

Donors Bid Farewell to Downton Abbey

Nanci Totah, Patrick Magill (’77) and Linda Magill (’79) bid farewell to Downton Abbey at the NSM and University Libraries Donor Appreciation Event held at Houston Public Media studios. Undergraduate Research Enhances Coursework

Ziba Colah, a biochemistry major, presents her research poster at UH’s Undergraduate Research Day. She has been doing research for two years in the lab of Daniel Frigo, an assistant professor in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry.

Moutafis Receives First Place in Scholarly Publications

Panagiotis Moutafis, Ph.D. Student in Computer Science (center), won first place in the Scholarly Publications competition at UH’s Second Annual Graduate Research and Scholarship Projects Day. His article, “Can We Do Better in Unimodal Biometric Systems? A Rank-based Score Normalization Framework,” was published in IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics. He is shown with Provost Paula Short and UH Graduate School Dean Dmitri Litvinov. Moutafis graduated in December.
